School Improvement Plan (SIP) Mtg. (8/5)

Principal Mr. Murphy and members of the leadership team are inviting all parents to provide input on school priorities and the school improvement plan for 2009-10. The summer is a great opportunity for parents to learn about new school initiatives, to provide input on action plans and implementation for the next school year, to support parent involvement, and to get to know Mr. Murphy and the leadership team. Mr. Murphy will also be discussing new initiatives such as MCPS advanced courses, middle school reform, emergency preparedness, school climate and bullying, and more.

In an attempt to accommodate more parents, the summer meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Center. Additional opportunities will be held later in August and at PTA meetings and Principal Coffees throughout the school year.

All parents are invited. If you plan on attending on August 5, please RSVP to Claudette_K_Hamerski@mcpsmd.org.

Farquhar’s Telephone Lines Down (6/12)

Today, Friday, June 12, the main telephone lines to Farquhar Middle School are not functioning. The problem has been identified as a Verizon issue and repair is underway. In the meantime, the Farquhar main office can be reached directly by calling (301) 924-3102 or 3103. Thank you for your understanding.

Summer School Registration Still Open! Deadline May 22

Registration is still open! Courses are being filled on a first-come basis. The courses will be held July 6-31 from 7:45 – 11:30 a.m. each day. Bus transportation is available, as is financial assistance for students who have financial need. Course offerings will include intervention programs in reading (all grades) and math (7^th grade), as well as for acceleration into Algebra next year. The courses include:

Intervention Reading (July 6-31)

Intervention Mathematics 7 (July 6-31)

Focus on Algebra (July 6-24)

Writer’s Workshop(July 6-24).

A huge thank you to the dedicated parent leaders and volunteers who made the 2009 Roadrunner Night and Silent Auction an astounding success. Your efforts made for an enjoyable evening for hundreds of children, as well as for a successful fundraiser to benefit our school and PTA. As our biggest event of the year, this could not have happened without the planning, organization, hard work, and dedication of our parent community. As highlighted during our 40 Year Celebration, one of Farquhar’s defining characteristics is supportive parents and a tight-knit community, which truly shines at events like these.

Thank you so much too all of the wonderful parents that made it happen. Have a great weekend.

Important Message from Principal Scott Murphy

As you know, MSA testing begins on Monday, March 16 for 6th Grade, and on Wednesday, March 18 for 7th and 8th Grades. The complete schedule can be found here:

The MSA’s are very important tests that will measure student progress this year, and are also used for appropriate placement in classes for next year and planning for high school. It is very important that all students are present and get to school on time. Testing will begin promptly at 7:50 a.m. each day of testing. On days that students are not testing, they will attend their regularly scheduled classes.

There is no need to study — just remember to have them get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast, and get to school on time. The only items students should bring to testing are pencils and calculators (math test only). Most importantly, please encourage students to do their best!

When MSA’s are finished (March 23 for 6th Grade, March 25 for 7th/8th Grade), we are planning a fun-filled celebration to let the students unwind, to include game activities, movies, a dance, and more. Thank you for your support.

All parents are invited to join the Farquhar Leadership Team (administrators, department chairs, team leaders) on July 17 at 8:30 a.m., as we look back on 2007-08 and develop our school improvement plan for 2008-09. Parents will have the opportunity to hear about school priorities, provide input about action plans for 2008-09, and discuss how parents can help. Have a great summer! I want to thank all parents, students, & staff for making 2007-08 such an outstanding school year. With impressive academic achievements, enrichments in after-school programs, athletics, & the arts, overcoming obstacles, and forging new relationships, I am so proud of everything our students and staff accomplished.

To our 8th graders, I know you are prepared for the excitement and rigors of high school, while you work toward your goals and prepare yourselves for college. To our 6th and 7th graders, I look forward to seeing you back in August ready for another exciting and challenging year.

We also look forward to seeing many of you for our summer programs July 7-August 1 at at Sherwood Elementary School. The Farquhar summer school office can be reached directly at Sherwood ES at ( 301) 924-3198 beginning July 7.
