We need Book Fair Volunteers from December 5-9. The fair will be open each day from 7:30 am – 2:40 pm. However, Tuesday, December 6, the book fair will be extended until 6:30 pm. Please contact Marti Ladd if you are able to help out. (Martha_J_Ladd@mcpsmd.org)

Food Drive Donations

SGA will be holding our 3rd annual food drive November 14-December 12. Our goal is to reach 2,000 food items. We will be collecting food items in 1st period classes. The classes will have a competition. The 1st period who brings the most food items for each grade level will win a breakfast.

Donations of Fabric

SGA is looking into creating no sew scarves to give to charity. They are going to ask fabric stores for donations. However, if a parent has any extra fabric to donate, SGA would love it. Please contact Rachel Lazarick if you have any donations. (Rachel_Lazarick@mcpsmd.org)

The resolution below regarding Montgomery County establishing a teenage curfew was provided to the Montgomery County Council of PTA delegates last month to have them share it with their local PTAs for a vote. This resolution will be reviewed at the next FMS PTA meeting, on Oct 11, 2011, at 7pm in the Media Center.

***************************************************

Proposed Resolution in Support of Legislation Creating a Teenage Curfew in Montgomery County

Whereas:

1. According to a survey by the United States Conference of Mayors, more than 500 U.S. jurisdictions have youth curfews, including 84 percent of cities with populations over 180,000. In our area, two of the largest urban areas, the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County have curfew laws, as does Baltimore. Virginia has a state-wide curfew. In 1996, President Bill Clinton recommended a 9:00 p.m.
youth curfew to protect young people from becoming victims.

2. In the past several months police have seen gang members and other young adults coming from neighboring areas that have curfews (the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County) and engaging
in unlawful or violent activities – at times including county youth or directed at them.

3. A recent analysis of reported crime in Montgomery County regarding juveniles revealed:

• The percentage of juvenile arrests (out of total arrests) increased from 12% in 2006 to 21% in 2010.

• For each year from 2008 through 2010, juvenile victims accounted for approximately 4% of all victims reporting incidents in the county.

• The percentage of robberies occurring between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. with any juvenile arrest has increased steadily since 2008. However, the percentage of robberies in that same time period with
any juvenile victim has decreased.

• The percentage of assaults occurring between the above hours with any juvenile arrest has increased steadily since 2008, and the percentage of assaults occurring between those hours with a
juvenile victim has increased.

• The percentage of weapon offenses occurring between the above hours with any juvenile arrest has increased since 2008.

4. A survey by the group of 347 cities with populations over 30,000 found the following:

• 90 percent of jurisdictions with curfews said that enforcing a curfew was a good use of Police time.

• 93 percent said a nighttime curfew was a useful tool for police officers.

• 88 percent said curfews helped make their streets safer for residents.

• 83 percent said curfews helped to curb gang violence.

5. Montgomery County is considering a limited youth curfew as an additional method to improve the safety of juveniles, the safety of residents and visitors to our increasingly urbanized communities, and to reduce juvenile-related crimes.

Be it resolved that:

MCCPTA supports in principle the adoption of a juvenile curfew with fines and community service as a deterrent to commit youth crimes and that contains a list of special circumstances for exempt activities.

All donated clothes will be given to the Interfaith Clothing Center on Twinbrook Parkway. The Interfaith Clothing Center distributes donated gently used, or new, children’s, women’s and men’s clothing (also household goods, school supplies, infant items, toys and children’s books) free of charge to low-income residents of Montgomery County. It is a worthy cause and it is the right thing to do. Send in your kids with an armful of no longer used winter weather clothing. A box has been provided for donations, and it is located in the main hallway right across from the main office. Best of all, donating is a win-win situation. You feel great about losing the clutter AND doing the right thing, and the recipients of your donations feel great because they’re finally warm. We thank you for thinking of others less fortunate. Happy Holidays to all!

Got clothes that the kids have outgrown? Just noticed when the weather turned that your child’s jeans are too short? That the sweaters are too tight? Shoes too small? How about donating those cold weather clothes to the Cold Weather Clothing Drive? Have your kids bring the clothes in and drop them off in the box marked “Temple Emanuel’s Cold Weather Clothing Drive” located near the front office. All clothes will be donated to the Interfaith Center (http://www.jirs.org/jirs/jirs0005jn.html) and distributed to those who can’t afford new clothes this year. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to think about those less fortunate than you. Give them something to be thankful for as well. All size cold weather clothes will be appreciated. This clothing drive will continue through the holidays. Thank you so much for your donations! Happy Holidays!
