Come out to Parent Talks
Parent Talks are sponsored by the Education Committee of the Farquhar PTA. These presentations have been conveniently scheduled during school dances and PTA meetings in order to share relevant information with parents and assist in the academic and social growth of our students. Farquhar’s feeder elementary school parents are invited (Brooke Grove, Cloverly, Sherwood, Stonegate). Parents only please. All meetings will be held in the Media Center.
November 13, 7:00 – 9:00 “Bullying” Join Principal, Scott Murphy, Assistant Principal, Scott Gitchell and Simone Geness, Assistant School Administrator in a discussion on Bullying. They will cover the definitions of bullying, what to look for with victims, perpetrators, and bystanders. They will also cover processes that are in place to address incidents, and the range of consequences. Tips and strategies will be shared on proactive steps that educators, parents, & students can take together to promote a positive school climate and healthy relationships.
December 11th 7:30-8:30 “Fostering Cooperation in Children with Special Needs” Join us at 7:00 for the General PTA Meeting
Children with special needs tend to display their feelings with extreme intensity, and behave in a particular way that keeps their parents on an emotional rollercoaster and that can make it difficult to maintain calm, consistent discipline. During this presentation, Sue Clark, Certified Parent Educator with the Parent Encouragement Program (PEP) in Kensington will share tips on how to boost children’s confidence, increase their sense of power and contribution, and promote greater harmony in families. Sue has taught children from kindergarten through high school and is the mother of one teen son, Patrick, who has recovered from Pervasive Developmental Disorder, a mild form of autism.
February 19th 7:30-8:30 “Internet Safety” Join us at 7:00 for the General PTA Meeting
With kids on the frontlines of internet activity, it is imperative that parents and educators learn how to keep teens safe. Join this expert team, Jennifer Firestone, LCSW – C, JSSA Clinical Social Worker and Shelley Lipton, Program Socialist, Montgomery County Police to discuss: The importance of internet safety, prevention strategies and practical tips in keeping children safe. Also, learn what the Sex Offender Registry is, how it works, and how to access it.
April 8th – 7:00-8:00 “Recognizing Teen Depression”
Our topic expert will be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from JSSA, Jewish Social Service Agency. The discussion is designed to help parents recognize signs of depression, and to help them understand which behaviors, situations, and symptoms are cause for concern and which are normal developmental behaviors. Prevention and coping skills will also be shared.
