Farquhar Middle School PTA

The Farquhar PTA has several positions that are still open. If you would like to be involved with Farquhar this year, this is a great way to be active in our school. Most of the positions require a limited amount of time and provide a wonderful way to make a difference in our children’s school. None of these positions require that you “do it all”. Your job will be to coordinate the activities and encourage participation from Farquhar parents in each of these areas.

President-Elect/ 1st Vice President: This person serves as president “in-training” and as an aide to the president in coordinating the work of the officers and committee chairs.

Communications Secretary: The Communications Secretary coordinates activities of the various PTA Communications Committees to provide vital and interesting information to the school community. Stay informed and stay connected to Farquhar; check out the Farquhar PTA website, the Farquhar Flash e-mail notifications, the weekly Farquhar Newsletter, and the monthly Farquhar Forum–all produced by the Communications team. Ask questions, get answers, and become (or continue to be) an active participant in your child’s school community. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

MIDDLE SCHOOL REFORM: The Chair will act as a liaison between MCPS and FMS to stay current on The Policy IEB, Middle School Reform, which is designed to support the formulation of a comprehensive plan
for middle school that increases and sustains student achievement. This chair will attend all necessary MCPS meetings report back to FMS on all of the recommended plans for reform as they are being devised.

Student Dance / Rec Evenings: Coordinate these PTA sponsored evenings which are open to all Farquhar students; and may include dancing along with other activities such as sports, roller-blading, etc. The
Halloween, Valentine and Spring Dances are held from 7:00 – 9:30 pm and are chaperoned by both the parents and FMS staff.

RoadRunner Family Fun Night: Coordinate this evening of indoor recreational activities for all FMS families and the community-at-large including games, sports, bingo, food, cake-walk, etc. This is
our largest and only Fundraising Event of the year.

TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE: Provide assistance to local PTA and school in the use of technology in education to identify computer-related needs and to help meet those needs.

Parent Involvement/ Outreach Volunteers are needed to help us develop new ideas and forums for reaching the Farquhar parent community. A new event stemming from these ideas is the Parent Social held during recreational evenings. Initiate and establish dialogue with parents.

Parent –Student Programs: The PTA is constantly looking for guest speakers or programs that are of interest to both our parent and student community. Volunteers help identify and research programs to
be held in conjunction with PTA Meetings, other school-sponsored event or after school.

FLES: The FLES Program offers year-round, extracurricular, sequential language classes for students enrolled in 6th grade.

PUBLIC RELATIONS: Furthers community awareness of the school and the PTA’s work by publicizing activities to MCPS, media, cluster schools, etc. and serves as a liaison to the media, speaks for the PTA as requested and advises on public relations matters.

Webmaster Posts PTA and school news and calendar items to the Farquhar Middle School website.

Newsletter editors: The “Farquhar Forum” is compiled on a monthly basis, delivering school, PTA and community news. Ideally, editors alternate months for formatting and finalizing copy for the
Distribution Committee.
